Where did my freedom go

Ramblings from a rambler

Elections are coming soon. Yes, before you know it there will be a storm of ads, prints and a miriad of announcements of all colors both offline and online. This year, actually 2008, will be the year in which we will see an explosion of internet campaigns done through advertising, bloggers, forums and the like. And in particular sites like youtube and privately through social networks such as facebook.

Whether this debases this phenomenal platform that -just like TV- holds the promise of a more enlightened world, I do not know. But just like you I will probably feel a little sad to see a magnanimus exploitation of this rich medium that will be grossly converted into a stadium where rivals will seek to achieve any kind of advantages. The internet is proliferating with all kinds of sites and we are already witnessing an explosion of clones youtube-like sites that are being used as adult venues for promotion of nothing else but nude women. Bearing nude breasts is nothing to be afraid about and certainly nothing that I condemn. But it appears that many players who have set up shop outside of the US are being very aggresive promoters of a more hardcore line which is always risky in many different ways.

Politics aside, I always debate with my children who are now grown up what would be the internet like in just another two years when broadband prices become rock-bottom, speeds will fly off the earth at 30mb downstream and we will all be using portables just like we used watches in the past.

What do you think? Will PCs become obsolete and a newer fresher way of interneting will become prevalent through handhelds and no use of browsers? So many things...
